Maine Senators Could Play Key Roles In Finding Justice Kennedy’s Replacement

Sen. Angus King, I-Maine, left, speaks with Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, before a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing on 'Policy Response to Russian Interference in the 2016 U.S. Elections' on Capitol Hill, Wednesday, June 20, 2018, in Washington.

Maine’s two senators could play key roles in the confirmation of the replacement for Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, who has announced his retirement.

Kennedy has been widely viewed as the swing justice on the court, a conservative with a libertarian streak who sometimes votes with the four more conservative justices, other times with the four more liberal justices. President Trump says he will nominate a conservative to replace Kennedy and that has touched off intense lobbying by advocacy groups at both ends of the spectrum. Chief Political Correspondent Mal Leary has covered past judicial nominations and spoke with Ed Morin about the process.
