Gov. Paul LePage greets students at a mock election event Wednesday in Augusta.

AUGUSTA, Maine — Maine’s school children have spoken, and they have chosen Donald Trump and said no to marijuana.

Students from more than 150 Maine schools chose the Republican businessman over Democrat Hillary Clinton in a mock election. They also cast a vote of disapproval about an upcoming statewide referendum that could legalize recreational use of marijuana for people 21 years of age and older.

The results were tallied Wednesday in the state capital of Augusta.

Maine’s students also chose incumbent U.S. Reps. Chellie Pingree and Bruce Poliquin during the mock event. Pingree is a Democrat and Poliquin is a Republican.

The students approved of five other statewide referendum questions. The questions include the creation of a new tax on higher earners to fund public education and a hike of the minimum wage.
