Mason's Expected Candidacy Announcement Cancelled for Now

LISBON, Maine-  Maine Republican Senator Garrett Mason was expected to announce his candidacy for the Maine governor's race at an event in Lewiston Wednesday afternoon.  That event has now been cancelled due to the sudden death of Mason's mother.

Mason, in a statement describes his mother, Gina, as the "bedrock" of his family.

Mason did not elaborate on what his campaign plans are.

Mason is a 32-year-old Republican from Lisbon. He is serving his second term as Senate Majority leader. This is his fourth term in the Senate which means he is term-limited.

Mason has been expected to join fellow Republican, former Maine Department of Health and Human Services Commissioner Mary Mayhew  in a sparsely populated Republican field for the GOP gubernatorial primary race.
