Owner Of Maine's Biggest Newspaper Buys More Publications

The owner of a newspaper group that dominates Maine media says he will expand his publishing footprint by acquiring two more daily papers and a weekly group.

MaineToday Media owner Reade Brower said Friday that he is purchasing The Times Record of Brunswick and the Journal Tribune of Biddeford along with Mainely Media weekly publications. Although these latest acquisitions mean that Brower now owns six of Maine's seven daily newspapers, he says he's committed to allowing each publication to determine how the needs of its readership will be met. Brower says his seven-year track record in building his newspaper holdings reflects that business strategy.

"I've continued to allow them to operate autonomously and to continue to compete vigorously for stories and advertising and not meddle and get too much into the day-to-day," Brower said.

MaineToday publishes the Portland Press Herald and Maine Sunday Telegram, as well as the Kennebec Journal in Augusta and Morning Sentinel in Waterville. MaineToday also owns the Sun Media Group, which publishes the Sun Journal in Lewiston and several weekly papers. The only Maine daily Brower does not control is the Bangor Daily News.
