Purchase of Pristine Casco Bay Islands Closer

PORTLAND, Maine — The Maine Coast Heritage Trust has won a $262,500 state grant that buoys it efforts to buy two uninhabited islands in Casco Bay.

The grant announced Wednesday will be combined with $140,000 raised through private donations, as the trust seeks to raise $925,000 by the end of August to exercise its option to buy the Goslings.

Although the owners of the islands which are officially in Harpswell have allowed paddlers and boaters to anchor and come ashore for years, the purchase would ensure that ``No Trespassing'' signs will never be posted.

Richard Knox, a spokesman for the trust, tells the Portland Press Herald buying the islands will make them accessible to the public forever.
