State Education Reform Group to Meet Monday

AUGUSTA, Maine_ Early College will be a major topic of discussion Monday when the Commission to Reform Public Education Funding and Improve Student Performance holds its regular meeting at the Cross Office Building in Augusta.

University of Maine System Chancellor James Page will brief the panel on the program which is becoming more popular across the University of Maine System.

"The University of Maine System has been making a real priority to extend early college access into Maine high schools," says UMS spokesman Dan Demeritt.  "We have programing available to more than 100 high schools across the state."

Demeritt says that this fall, nearly 2500 students are taking over 12-thousand credits of college course work while still in high school.

The commission is required to report back to the governor's office and to the legislature in January to provide recommendations for reforming the educational funding model along with ways to improve student performance.
