AUGUSTA, Maine - Maine’s Drought Task Force says a severe drought continues in part of the state, with no relief in sight.
The Task Force assessed reports from across the state and found severe drought conditions in the southern part of the state. Northern Maine is continuing to have enough rainfall.
Bruce Fitzgerald is director of the Maine Emergency Management Agency. “We definitely are still in drought conditions, so the rainfall and even the humidity - even though it feels we are living in a cloud right now - doesn’t do anything for our groundwater levels," he says, "and that’s really the indicator for drought conditions.”
Fitzgerald says there are scattered reports of private wells going dry, but no problems with public water supplies. He says fire fighters are finding they have to spend more time at fires in southern Maine to make sure fires are out. Fitzgerald says most crop reports are good for the harvest season, except for a few crops in southern Maine.
