Wind Developer Abandons Maine Project After PUC Decision

AUGUSTA, Maine - A wind power developer is abandoning negotiations on a long-term power purchase agreement in Maine after regulators decided to reconsider the term sheet.

Jeremy Payne from the Maine Renewable Energy Association said Monday that SunEdison decided to negotiate a long-term agreement with other states in New England. He stressed that the wind power project is still on track, but the power would be purchased by ratepayers elsewhere instead of by ratepayers in Maine.

The Maine Public Utilities Commission approved the term sheet for Weaver Wind in Hancock County and another one for NextEra's High Wind in Somerset County in December.

Then regulators voted 2-1 in February. Critics have accused Gov. Paul LePage of exerting influence over the independent commissioners.
