The Washington Post columnist David Ignatius has served as a reporter, foreign correspondent, editor and columnist—and he’s the author of 11 popular spy thrillers. His books incorporate timely issues as well as clues for readers to solve. He’ll discuss his latest novel, Phantom Orbit, and offer his perspective on global events and foreign affairs.

Wed May 22 – RIVER RESTORATION

The work of restoring Maine's rivers began in earnest in the 1970s with the Clean Water Act. Next came efforts to remove dams and culverts to promote fish passage. Today, many are looking to a method known as "large wood restoration" as the way to bring river habitats back to health. We'll learn about the latest approaches to fostering clean water and healthy river ecosystems.

Thu May 23 – WABANAKI BASKETMAKING: JEREMY FREY

Wabanaki people originally wove baskets for functional purposes, but, over time, basketmaking has evolved into more of an art form. Today, some have taken the art of basketmaking to new levels--such as the renowned Passamaquoddy artist Jeremy Frey. His work will be featured at the Portland Museum of Art in a first-ever major retrospective of a Wabanaki artist in an American fine art museum. We'll learn how he honors his tribal traditions while also forging new artistic paths.
 
Fri May 24 – FIBER ARTS

Fiber artists in Maine includes those who knit, sew, embroider, weave, felt, spin—and more. We talk with fiber enthusiasts about the variety of methods and materials that they use--and what they make, from socks to fine art. And we'll hear about fiber arts classes, workshops, and festivals—including Fiber Frolic, coming up in June. This show is part of our “Passions & Pastimes” series.
